Courtney Smith serves as Director of Volunteer Outreach & Education with The Veterans Consortium Pro Bono Program (TVC). In this role, Courtney is in charge of all recruiting, training, case placement, and support for TVC’s National Volunteer Corps℠ of more than 2,500 attorneys, paralegals, and related pro bono professionals from 84 of the top AmLaw 100 firms and dozens of corporate legal departments, plus mid-size firms, boutique firms, law schools, and solo practitioners. Throughout her tenure at TVC, Courtney has successfully evaluated hundreds of cases and placed over 1,000 with volunteer attorneys. In addition, she has represented appellants and mentored pro bono attorneys in their respective cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC). Courtney oversaw the creation and implementation of TVC’s Limited Legal Assistance and Information Helpline. As the lead Helpline attorney, Courtney provided information and guidance to unrepresented appellants at the Court. Courtney currently oversees TVC’s externship, fellowship and volunteer law clerk programs, in addition to engaging with law schools. Prior to joining TVC, Courtney served as a law clerk for Chief Judge William P. Greene, Jr. (ret.) at the CAVC.
Courtney is a graduate of The University of Richmond (B.A.) and Howard University School of Law (J.D.). She is admitted to practice in New Jersey, New York, and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. She is a member of the Federal Bar Association, the CAVC Bar Association, and the National Organization of Veterans’ Advocates. She is a former member of the Board of Governors of the CAVC Bar Association and served on the American Bar Association’s Commission on Veterans’ Legal Services. Courtney also earned an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management at Georgetown University in May 2017 and participated in the U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar in June 2018. Courtney is a New Jersey native who currently resides in Washington, D.C. with her husband and daughter.
